1. DARG dawg!
A day of flat out animal rescue! You will join DARG, or the Dog Animal Rescue Group. It is a pro-life, non-profit organization that rescues, cares for, sterilizes and rehouses abused, neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. DARG plays a crucial role in the communities of Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg and the greater Hout Bay area. Expect to see hardships, expect to really make a difference!
Roll up your rescue sleeves, ’cause Dr. Pol will be nothing compared to you!
What will I do on a rescue day? Excellent question champ.
Help take care of wounded and sick animals in need of rehab.
Depending on your skill level and education, you will assist in sterilizations, other operations, diagnostics and treatments.
Take the sheltered dogs out on a beach walk and let them have the time of their lives!
Learn more about rehabilitation and non-profit organizations.
Put on African glasses. Visit different communities and learn more about cultural differences and behavior towards animals. You are in Africa baby!
By participating in this program you will also donate a sterilization and provide medical aid to the animals most in need. Man, you rock…
2. Cape fur seal encounter!
Let’s get wet! Cape Town is right by the ocean. It would be a crime not to go in it! Right?
You will board the boat and get to a colony of thousands of seals in the bay. Watching them in their natural habitat is fantastic, but there is more! You will get the chance to jump into the water for 1 hour, and get real close for a gasping nose to nose seal encounter! Seals are very curious creatures, often they casually accompany scuba divers in the bay just for fun. So get ready to fall in love! Really! Thousands of seals are waiting for you. This really is one of the coolest things ever!
3. Cape vet experience!
During your stay, you will join Dr. Brady and his team for a day of veterinary excellence. Dr. Brady runs his own veterinary clinic in the heart of Hout bay. Watch and learn how the team handles a wide variety of cases and assist as much as possible. Dr. Brady works with all kinds of species, like cats, dogs and wildlife, but predominately domestic animals. He also does the sterilizations for DARG.
4. Feather mania!
World of birds is the biggest bird park in Africa, and one of the largest around the world. With more than 3000 species you will be exposed to a large amount of our feathered friends. In 2017 there was a HUGE outbreak of avian influenza in South Africa. On your visit, an experienced bird specialist will learn you all the tricks of the bird trade! From the avian sneeze, to breeding behavior, to handling the most exotic bird. This rock&roller will teach you everything!
When there is a sick bird, or when vaccinations need to be made, YOU get to do it! Ever held a spix macaw? Me neither, but it might be just your lucky day!
5. Sleep & eat with a view!
Hout Bay is only a 20 minute drive from the city centre of Cape Town. You will stay in a cool hostel that has a nice easy going atmosphere. Perfect after a busy day at the vet’s or in the slums! You’ll be sharing your room with your companions. The room has a balcony with seaside view. The hostel is in walking distance of the beach, shopping centre and a lot of places to eat at!
6. Road Trip Baby!
One of your days at CTO, you will embark on an epic road trip. What is a road trip without cool stops? Pretty boring, I can tell you that! We will have none of that! Here’s what you will do on the trip:
Boulders beach, also known as Boulders Bay, is your first stop and it is known for the big penguin colony that nests there. It’s right near Simon’s Town, a small little fishing village. You will see the Jackass penguin in its natural environment. Over a thousand of these black-footed birds juggle around the beaches. Ever heard a donkey braying? Well the Jackass penguin makes a similar sound, so expect a choir of a thousand donkeys! Oh and btw, shameless selfies are allowed!
Upon request, and outside nesting season, you might even get to swim with them!
Shark Spotters is an internationally awarded shark safety and research organization. You will get to meet these cool people in person! They will teach you more about diseases of great white sharks, human wildlife conflict, safety, and conservation of the mightiest hunter of the seven seas. Your visit through The Wildest Trail also means a donation to keep their research going!
Cape Point Ostrich farm!
The ostrich industry is huge in South Africa. This is your chance to learn more about the breeding of ostriches. If lucky you will even see some babies running around. Although they look sweet, these big birds are strong as hell, and incredibly stupid. Did you know their brain is as big as a walnut? Now you do!
Internationally awarded as one of the most beautiful view points in the world, will be your last stop on the road trip. What better way to end an exciting day, than a dreamy gaze at almighty Hout Bay around sunset! Ever been speechless looking at a panorama?
Whaaa that road trip looks sick!
7. Table Mountain!
Table Mountain is just a tectonic masterpiece. Probably the best known eminence of the entire African continent, maybe after Mount Kilimanjaro. If you are in Cape Town, you have to, must, you are compelled, obliged, nay.. you are necessitated to mount this Mount! We will take you there. The view is just flat out spectacular, especially around sunset! Phew, I am out of synonyms.
And as stunning as it is… you even get to dive from it if you want! Whaaat?
Let’s see if you have learned something while being in a student home! Doesn’t matter if you are a ninja with a cooking knife, or burn even the easiest omelette, in this program we are going to challenge your cooking skills! Upon arrival you can find a nice little recipe book with dishes that would make even the judges of Masterchef drool from their noses. Try them out and eat like an African king every night! Return home, and amaze your friends and granny with your new-learned cooking powers, really!
A real traditional African BRAAI will also be cooked especially for you! Om nom nom…
Omg omg omg can’t wait!
